I love this question. There are so many more reasons to go to the gym than not. It will depend on your current goals or level of commitment, I suppose.
It does definitely happen, but occasionally for me. I make it a priority over almost everything else. I have carved out specific blocks of hours multiple times per week, as I am committed to staying fit and being healthy and just into my 40s.
Here is what I think about if this creeps into my head:
- Why don’t I want to go to the gym?
- How much extra work will I need to do to make up for my missing a routine?
- Is it really worth it for an hour or 2 of my time?
So let’s quickly break it down by these three questions, which I ask myself if I don’t feel like going to the gym.
Why don’t I want to go to the gym?
Obviously this could be for a number of reasons, however, most of the time it is just laziness. I can’t say that I love going to the gym but I definitely love the results I get from going. If you’re genuinely sick – you should probably skip the gym as to not pass anything to others that use the facility. Again, these are two of the three things that come to mind if I were to ask myself why don’t I want to go to the gym?
How much extra work will I need to do to make up for my missing a routine?
Depending on where you are in your fitness journey this will obviously differ but the question remains true if you are a pro or a beginner.
You will factually eat the same or more calories (unless your eating at a deficit or fasting) therefore you will need to do an extra amount of work simply to get back to where you were before.
Will this make a difference?
I can tell you that I have a 150-160 build at 5’8” and 5 pounds at this weight shows a massive increase. Two pounds, I can definitely tell that I’m off. Now this will obviously will vary per individual. In my mind, it does make a difference.
Is it really worth it for an hour or 2 of my time?
In my opinion, it is not worth having to make up for being lazy. Just go and do your routine and you will feel excellent after. You will tell yourself that you are happy that you went instead of just sitting around.
